Newsletter - 6th October 2026
Give a book to a friend
My media-savvy children are always telling me that my newsletters are too long. So I'm going to surprise them (and perhaps you?) this week by keeping this newsletter short.
I've been giving away complimentary Spotify audiobook copies of The Foreign Aide recently. Now I'd like to let you give one away too. Or more than one if you like — helping to introduce me to more readers and listeners.
If you know someone who might enjoy the book, tell them about it.
But how do you describe a whole book in ten seconds? I'd do it something like this:
It's the story of two expatriate couples caught up in the opening months of Lebanon's civil war, when the people they trust — and their relationships with each other — begin to unravel.
Then, if they're interested, show them the code below, or send them the link, which will take them to a special page on my website. There, they'll be able to listen to a short sample and request their own complimentary Spotify audiobook copy.
Sorry, the QR code below is deliberately blurred, because this special ' Gift A Book' offer is only available to newsletter subscribers. But if you'd like to join in, just sign up to get my free fortnightly newsletter at the bottom of this page, and I'll email the newsletter with the real QR code to you within 24 hours.

And if you haven't already claimed an audiobook copy yourself, you're very welcome to use the link too.
That's it. I told you it would be short. (But to compensate, my next newsletter will be just a week away, with an issue dedicated to The Care Combine project. It'll be my contribution to a debate that's currently hot here in the UK: what sort of dementia care do we want, and how are we going to pay for it?)
Best wishes,
Alan
